Comedy, UR
Innovative and influential, and originally envisaged as children’s show, Do Not Adjust Your Set was a madcap early-evening comedy sketch show that quickly acquired a cult following with Swinging Sixties adults, who rushed home from work to see it. Written by and starring Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, with great performances and additional material by David Jason and Denise Coffey, it also provided an early showcase for the hilarious animations of Terry Gilliam, and the brilliantly bizarre musical antics of the legendary Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. In the final episodes of the first series, the the cast seems thoroughly at ease with each other, delivering both slapstick and cerebral sketches with smooth efficiency, including a terrific ‘Art Gallery’ sketch, with a Gumby-esque Terry Jones exhibited as a living art work. The British classic system is also in evidence in the casting of the ‘How to Fall Over’ sketch, wherin we see Oxford graduate Palin delivering the smooth monologue, while poor commoner Jason is asked to take many a rough demonstrative tumble for the cameras.
