Roger Borniche (Alain Delon) is a different kind of cop - cool, charismatic, he never carries a gun and even has gangsters thank him for his kindness. He is on the hunt for Emile Buisson (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a violent killer escaped from an insane asylum and who has no compunctions about rubbing out his own accomplices.
